Daniel G. Krutka, Ph.D.
Dan Krutka (he/him/his; Krut-kuh) is a human, probably too tethered to his smartphone, but human nonetheless. He grew up in Tahlequah and Tulsa, Oklahoma. A former high school social studies teacher in Oklahoma City, his paying job is as Associate Professor of Social Studies Education. He has published nearly 100 scholarly articles that have been cited almost 5,000 times concerning intersections of media/technology, democracy, and social studies education. He has published in prestigious journals such as Theory & Research in Social Education, Computers & Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, and the Harvard Educational Review. He has won numerous awards including the 2023 The National Technology Leadership Initiative (NTLI) Fellowship Award (CUFA), the 2021 McJulien Scholar Award (AECT), the 2017 Outstanding Research Paper Award (ISTE), International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the 2016 Early Career Award (TACTL SIG of AERA), and the 2016 Young Educator Award (University of Oklahoma). He is co-editor for the Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE)—Social Studies journal, hosts the Visions of Education podcast, and edited the 2018 book, Keywords in the Social Studies. In his teaching, he critically inquires alongside students for just, multiracial, and technoethical democracy. He served his city as the Traffic Safety Commissioner and advocated for a more accessible, walkable, and rollable built environment. He is also a bit fanatic about fitness, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Keywords in the Social Studies book
Dan co-edited the 2018 book, Keywords in the Social Studies: Concepts and Conversations, as part of the Counterpoints: Studies in Criticality series. Leading scholars in the social studies education unsettle words commonly used in social studies education in ways that will redefine the field for years to come. The book is timely and essential reading for graduate students and faculty in social studies education and curriculum studies; students and teacher candidates in undergraduate and graduate education courses; and practitioners teaching in schools, museums, and other spaces of learning. Visions of Education podcast
Since 2016, Dan has co-hosted the Visions of Education podcast with high school social studies teacher Michael Milton. The podcast partners with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the prestigious Theory & Research in Social Education (TRSE) journal to feature the leading scholars and educators in social studies.
