When Dan and I launched the Civics of Technology project, our goal was to connect with like-minded folks interested in working toward just technological futures. It has been a joy to develop community through the Civics of Tech weekly blogs and comments, monthly Tech Talks, bi-monthly book clubs, the annual conference. One of my personal favorite ways to connect and grow in community is at our annual meet-ups at the AERA 2024 conference.

As much as I appreciate the way online video connections have helped me connect with CoT folks across the world, I can’t quite replicate the happiness I feel when we are able to share the same physical space. It is a gift to be able to gather in person, and I hope you can join us! To that end, we’re coordinating two opportunities to meet up with our fellow Civics of Technology humans at AERA.

  1. Meet-Up on Friday, April 12th, 4:00 p.m. @ Bar-Ly

  2. Attend sessions together, especially those related to advancing technology for more just futures.

Friday, April 12th, Meet-Up

Meet in person at Bar-Ly (101 N. 11th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107) from 4:00-5:30 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 12.

New to Civics of Tech? Join us! Been to every book club, tech talk, and conference? Join us! Had trouble making a virtual event, but excited to meet folks in person? Join us! Want to bring your friends who you just told about Civics of Tech? Join us! AI machine attempting to pass the Turing Test in a Philly establishment? Hang on, Ned Ludd’s hammer is around here somewhere.

Bar-Ly offers Happy Hour specials during this time. We’ll have some high top tables secured and discussion prompts ready for anyone who would like to gather.

RSVP through this form, and we’ll send you a calendar invite with the details. People do not have to RSVP to join, but it will help us estimate numbers. Can’t wait to see you!

AERA24 Civics of Technology Digest

We’re compiling a digest of sessions which feature Civics of Technology community members, contributors, or are related to our overall aim of advancing more just technological futures. Add your session, and add any sessions that you think might interest folks in the Civics of Tech community, by Friday, April 5th. Once we’ve got it compiled, we’ll email a link to the digest.

We hope to enjoy sharing time with you over AERA, whether it’s at our Friday meet-up, a session or two, or just a wave across the conference center! Please say hello and share in the joy of a little in-person community building.
